Stay Warm for Less
You don't need to tell us that when it's cold in Minnesota, it gets cold! With winter bearing down on us yet again, it is time to get in your closet and break out the earmuffs, jackets and scarves. If you have already done so and think you're old trusty coat of 15 years has seen better days, maybe it is time to invest in new winter gear.
Now that may sound scary considering how expensive winter gear can be, but if you know where to go to find deals on gear, you will be better equipped to fight the cold while keeping your wallet happy! Here are some ways to stay warm this winter while also saving money!
Save on Gear
Winter gear can be your best friend, but more often than not it is not your wallet best friend. With the technology improving in winter gear every year, the price keeps going up for items that will keep you warm.
The key is to either buy bulky jackets or buy used gear. Used gear can be great because you will be getting a nice product but usually for half of the cost. Websites such as eBay are great for searching for exact winter pieces. Make sure when researching used gear or clothing items that you read the full item description before bidding on the item. You don't want to purchase an item to find out it is defective or has any problems with it.
Another website that you can score used deals on is Craigslist. Craigslist is full of people looking to sell or trade winter camping gear. Make sure to meet in a public place and get accurate pictures and descriptions of the items you are intending to buy.
Save on Food
When camping in the winter, it is important to bring enough food so you don't have to go out and spend money at restaurants. Not only is it expensive, but it saves you and your crew from having to brave the weather for an expensive meal! If you take food with you, you can prepare nice meals in the comfort of your RV or campsite.
Some foods that are cheap and will also keep you warm are any type of vegetable soup, macaroni and cheese, grilled chicken and rice, stir-fry, etc. These meal options are all prepared hot and are meant to fill you up right! The key to any camping trip is to prepare meals before you go. Make sure you have the necessary ingredients and you will be much happier!
Save on Energy
The cost of heating an RV can get expensive, so if you can save a little money on the expensive heating options it can go a long way in saving you money! Propane costs can get pricey if you are heating your RV at a fairly high temperature. One of the more energy and cost efficient strategies some families have gone to is trying to heat there RV with a couple of space heaters. If you have a small enough RV, this strategy may work as opposed to in a larger rig. One in the living room and one in the bedroom may be all you need to stay warm, but the longer it is plugged in, the more electricity it is taking up.
