Hiking Lake Superior
April and May are the beginning of hiking season in Minnesota. So if you are planning your trips for the year start with the best hiking trail in Minnesota; the Superior Hiking Trail. Spanning almost 300 miles along the majestic Lake Superior, the trail spans from Duluth to the Canadian border. The trail opens for the season in May with their first event, Hike Fest, on May 15th. Along the trail you’ll pass through deep forests, scenic overlooks of Lake Superior, encounter diverse wildlife, and view breathtaking waterfalls. The trail can be split into day hikes or backpacking trips if 296 miles is too much for you to tackle. It can be accessed through 4 different spots along the trail: Jay Cooke State Park, Duluth, Two Harbors, and Grand Marais. There are 93 free backcountry campsites every 5-8 miles for rest and relaxation. There are no fees, reservations or permits required so you can come and go as you please. If you are new to hiking and have reservations about going out on your own, trail guides are available to take you on the trails. So pack up your RV and all your hiking gear and set out to hike Lake Superior. Visit www.shta.org for more information about the Lake Superior Trail and the best places to hike.
